Low Effort, High Impact: The 10 Minute Reset That Actually Works

A latte and a chocolate brownie with cornflakes on top sit on a wooden table near a window. Relaxing and cozy atmosphere.

Maternity leave is a time unlike any other, and some days it is entirely possible to reach mid-afternoon feeling both overstimulated and underwhelmed at the same time. Which feels a little unfair, but here we are!

There’s a lot of advice out there about routines and resets, but if you've scrolled them thinking 'there's no way I can do that with a baby', you're not alone. The rhythm of your day isn’t really your own, and the baby, unsurprisingly, has no interest in the fact you’re trying to reset.

On days like that, the idea of starting again properly can feel unrealistic at best. What tends to work better is something smaller and more contained, a reset that fits into the margins rather than demanding a full personality shift.

This is one we come back to often, not because it’s groundbreaking, but because it’s doable. Ten minutes, a handful of small actions, and just enough of a shift to make the next stretch of the day feel easier to move through.

Start with air and a bit of space

The quickest way to change how a room feels is to let something new into it. Opening a window, stepping outside, or even just standing in the doorway for a minute creates a subtle break between whatever has been building and whatever comes next. It’s a small act, but it does more than it should, especially if you’ve been inside all morning.

Finish something small and physical

There is something satisfying about completing a basic task properly. Making a drink and actually sitting with it, rather than reheating the same coffee three times and never quite finishing it, gives you a moment of pause that scrolling never delivers. It doesn’t matter what it is, it’s the act of completion it that helps.

Come back to the basics of self-care

This isn’t about a full routine, just the simplest version of looking after yourself. Washing your face, applying moisturiser, using hand cream. It sounds basic, but it works. It pulls you back into your body in a way that feels practical, not performative, which is exactly what you want.

Change one element of how you feel

A full outfit change is rarely necessary, but a small change can go a long way. Swapping into a clean top, adding a layer that feels a bit more like you, or taking a minute to redo your hair so it feels intentional rather than accidental. It’s less about how it looks and more about how it feels.

Reset a single surface

Instead of attempting to tackle everything, pick one contained space and sort it out. A kitchen counter, a coffee table, a bedside. Something finite that you can actually finish. That small pocket of order has a way of making everything else feel slightly less chaotic, even if nothing else has changed.

None of this is designed to turn the entire day around, and it doesn’t need to. What it offers is a small but noticeable lift, enough to create a bit of breathing room and make whatever comes next feel slightly easier to handle.

Because more often than not, it’s not about doing more. It’s about doing just enough to feel like yourself again.
